♥ happy christmas ♥

tonight i enjoyed christmas eve service with my family and was totally moved by the thought that Jesus coming to the earth truly encompassed every aspect of human need.  so thankful, blessed, and humbled to call HIM my king!

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

after christmas eve service we came home to dine with delicious homemade vegetable soup and watched "a christmas story," one of my favorite christmas traditions.

we finished the evening driving around town, enjoying the wonderful christmas lights.

i hope your christmas is merry, bright, full of joy, and that you make happy memories that will last a lifetime!

will be back next week to share some pics of my christmas season with you all!

christmas mail

yesterday i received my first two christmas cards in the mail from my brother and his wife and from my church family.  i get great joy out of going to my mailbox each day and opening it to see what treasures it might hold for me, but even more i enjoy sending treasures to my friends and family across the nation.  so of course, christmas cards are one of my favorite parts of the christmas season!  i want to share with you some of the great photo cards i discovered today at shutterfly.com.  On Shutterfly you can personalize your Christmas cards by using your own pictures and then add them to the wonderful photo templates they have available online.

they have something for everyone, from single photo cards to multiple photo cards, (you know, to make each member of your family a star).

since this is my first christmas engaged, i am so excited to send out pictures of my fiance and i to all of our friends and family.  our picture is a little goofy, really fun, and i can't post it on here yet.  (i want it to be a mailbox surprise) but i thought i would share some of the templates i am thinking about using to make our christmas card.

i absolutely love the color story used on this christmas card.

i think the plaid and the words "merry merry" would be the perfect compliment to our fun christmas picture!

and if you've been to my house and seen my brightly colored decorating, you'll understand why this card is one of my favorites.

Some other really neat things you can do on their website are create your own personalized holiday gifts tags.  Here are a few of my favorites!

i have this thing with reindeer this year, so this one is perfect.

i'm so in love with the colors and patterns on this gift tag.  It will look super cute on my simple brown wrapping paper.

And you can design your own photo books, which will make holiday scrapbooking simple, clean, and easy!  I love how you can make mini book like 5x7 or a standard 12x12 scrapbooking size.

Pictures are my favorite way to keep memories fresh, and shutterfly.com is a great resource to held you.  Check out their website today!

our story

I never thought I would be writing this out.  It has truly been a lifelong journey and I am so excited to share this with you today.

I woke up November 24, 2010 to a cloudy rainy day, but I knew the day before me was going to be magical; I just didn’t know how magical it would become.

Dane and I made the trip from Kansas City to Springfield, MO in order to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family.  Springfield is also the home of Miss Elsie & Miss Emma.  I have been reading Elsie’s blog faithfully for two years now.  She has been a huge inspiration to me creatively.  She also just opened a thrift store with her sister Emma and her fiancĂ© Jeremy in Springfield called Red Velvet.  Ever since I had heard about the store opening, I quickly added shopping there to my list of things to do before I die. Dane would always say, someday baby, we’ll go and enjoy Red Velvet together.

When we arrived, I was blown away by the store.  I was giddy to meet Elsie & Emma and my eyes couldn’t stop looking at all of the cuteness!  Dane and I began shopping our little vintage passionate hearts out.  I found two vintage dresses and a sweet baby fawn.  Dane found a cardigan and a tie.

After shopping I asked Dane if we could enjoy some cupcakes together.  Of course the answer was yes, and we walked to the sweets counter together, I was eager to pick out my favorite.  But then Dane said, “Christy turn around.”  Seated at the amazing 1960’s table were two cupcakes with “DW” and “CW” on them.  Those of you squealing and knowing what is coming next, let me simply share, I did not put it all together.

Dane had me set down, and he pulled out an art journal that he had made me called “Our Life…you and me.”  Just seeing that made me cry and I couldn’t even speak.  The book consisted of our journey together, and we laughed and enjoyed reliving some of our favorite memories together for about 20 minutes, of course I was crying.  Just check out the amazing artwork of my baby below!  For the last page in the journal, Dane explained that we would take a picture at the store and fill the rest of the book with our memories together as we serve God and love each other.

Then he gave me an owl puppet that he had also made!  (Look at my baby being all crafty!)

“Let’s eat cupcakes,” he said, “but first” and this is where He got down on one knee and I finally it hit me what was happening!

He said the sweetest things.  I wish I could remember it all word for word, but here’s what I do recall:  “I love you, I love who you are and I can’t wait to spend life with you and for us to serve God together, Christy, will you marry me?” I would like to note, I didn’t even look at the ring, I just hugged his neck and said yes with so much excitement and love bursting inside of me!  Then, after Dane dried my tears, he put the beautiful solitaire oval diamond ring on my finger.

Elsie came and took pictures of us throughout the store and then, put them on her blog.  It was such an honor to be a part of one of her amazing blog posts.

And finally, I got to enjoy the cupcake, and I put it all together, DW and CW…my soon to be initials!  My cupcake was vanilla cake with vanilla frosting rolled in sugar crystals.  Dane’s was chocolate cake with vanilla frosting, also rolled in sugar crystals.  It was the most delicious cupcake I have ever eaten in my life.

What is most exciting about it all is I feel totally at peace and excited about this decision, when I look back at how Dane and I have been brought together, I know that God’s hand has been in it, orchestrating every step, beautifully writing every detail of our stories together.

Ooooo!  I’m engaged my friends!  I’m engaged, and I’m excited for future posts where I can share with you some of the wedding planning details!  I’m engaged!!!!!!!

a lesson from the ryman

Today, I ate lunch on a balcony that overlooked the Ryman Auditorium.  It was really a gorgeous view.  I couldn’t help but recall watching The Grand Ole’ Opry with my grandpa and grandma and how we used to sing a long, and here’s something you might not know about me.  Back in the day, I wanted to be a country music singer.  When I think back on that dream, I recognize a lot of the problems with it and can now say “thank you Lord,” for not letting that dream come true.  I wanted that dream because I wanted to be on stage, I wanted people to want to be ME, I wanted them singing MY songs, I wanted to live a life of luxury, and I wanted to do something I enjoy sing.  Do you see my problem, it was all about ME.

Today, speaker Tim Eldridge proposed a question to me that really made me think about my future and what God has called me to do with my life, not what ME wants to do with my life.  The question is, “what breaks your heart?”  I want you to pander on that for a moment.

The show Lost has been a cultural phenomenon that had people hooked worse than many of their caffeine addictions.  I had never indulged in Lost, but after a good friend of mine loaned me season 1 on dvd, I thought I might try take my first hit.  I snuggled in with Dane (who is a Lost junky I might add) and we hit play.  I hated it.  It was disturbing and caused me to hurt so badly for the people on the screen.  The people losing loved ones, who were being terrorized by some crazy jungle monster, people who were starving, and losing limbs.  I hated it so much I started crying.  Dane looked at me and said, “Christy, its just a tv show, its ok.”  But I looked at him and responded with, “Dane, I know, but pain like that really does exist in the world, and that real pain is what is causing me to hurt.”

I feel people’s pain, not fully because we can never know fully how some things feel until we have experienced them ourselves, but it is a level of pain that eats at me.  When someone is crying, you will usually find me crying.  When someone is hurting, my heart is hurting.  When someone comes up to me and tells me their story about their drug addiction, how the church has hurt them, how they lost their virginity before marriage and regret every aspect of it, how someone touched them inappropriately, how they were forced into sex, how they got beat up or were bullied in school for being different, how they haven’t eaten in days and aren’t real sure where the next meal is coming from; it tears me up inside and my heart breaks.

I discovered the answer to my question, what breaks my heart, is the injustice in the world.

But today, while reflecting on what to do with my answer, I also discovered this about myself.  Since I experience other’s pain, I have created my own little comfortable world so I don’t have to deal with it.  I do what I can to avoid people’s pain.  Like a coward I refuse to ask the hard questions, or will avoid the situation all together.  I don’t read books about Christian martyrs or articles that talk about the sex slave trade because it hurts.

But this, is not what Jesus calls us to do.  Jesus engaged in people’s pain.  He would dive whole heartedly into a situation of hurt, and would see the pain people were in, and have compassion on them.  Matthew 9:36 says “When he saw the crows, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”  Jesus saw their pain, and he stuck right there with them, healing the diseased and sick, driving out demons, showing them love, giving them something worth putting their trust in.

In Mark 8 Jesus has been preaching to a group of people, over four thousand in fact, for three whole days.  He looks out on the crowds and sees them hungry because for three days they haven’t eaten.  Jesus calls his disciples together and says “I have compassion for these people, if I send them home hungry they will collapse on the way.”  Jesus saw these people were hurting, and instead of going off and taking care of his own needs allowing the crowd to figure it out themselves, he hung in there with them and had compassion.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired of this comfortable little world that I have created.  It’s plastic, its fake, it gets boring, and eventually this world will get broken and tossed out to the dogs with gnashing teeth.  In order to be real and to truly be a disciple of Christ, I must embrace the words of Galations 2:20 “I have been crucified with CHRIST and i no longer live, but CHRIST lives in me.” This takes the me out of the equation and replaces it with GOD’S will for my life, when GOD is in charge of my life then I will be able to have the courage to break out of the plastic world and will be able to fight the painful battles head on.

Paul reminds his brother Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:10 “you however know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings, what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, and the persecutions I endured.  Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.  In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”  I believe these words ring as true today for us as they did then to Timothy.  To follow Christ, we are going to have to experience pain.

So now I look at this gift of experiencing other people’s pain not as a curse, but as a blessing, because I know that what is breaking my heart  also breaks God’s heart.  And let me tell you something, God and me being on the same page, is a good thing.  And you might call me crazy for engaging in the pain of the world, but when I stand before my LORD, the LORD over all the universe, on judgment day and He looks at me and says “well done good and faithful servant, come and share your master’s happiness. ” well the anticipation of hearing those sweet words is all of the encouragement I’m going to need.  And once I’m there, my battle with pain will finally be finished.

My One True Love

What draws you to someone?  Seriously, take a moment and think about the people in your life.  What draws you to them?  We all have a reason for the people we have in our lives, the people view as important, worth our time, would like to know better.

What draws people to you?  What makes you unique?  What causes others to think, that person is special?  They have something about them that makes me want to get to know them, spend time with them, hear their thoughts on this or that.

We all have our reasons and thoughts, but let me propose a verse to you tonight that Harvey Carey spoke on this evening.  1 Samuel 16:7: ‘But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have accepted him.  The LORD does not look at the things that man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’”

When I honestly ask myself these questions, I come to realize that the people that I most often admire, the people I want to be around, sit down and have coffee with and here their thoughts on the world, are most often the people who have Jesus, and they actively are pursuing Him every single day. Their faith is genuine, real.  They know who they are in the eyes of the Creator, and they humbly accept their role as His servant, not glorified religious people.  Jesus is their one true love.  Not their husbands or wives, not their children, not their friends, and not themselves.  Jesus is their one true love.

Since the LORD is looking at your heart, I ask you this question to you, who or what does He see as your one true love?

What is it that you put your trust in?  What is it that you focus your time on?  What makes your world go around?  What do you get out of bed for every single day?  I’m going to be honest with you.  Sadly, Jesus is not my answer to this question every single day of my life, but I want Him to be.

I truly feel like the past year of my life has been Jesus continuously pulling at me to bring me back to Him. I have had to trust Him with blind faith, there have been days when I couldn’t have went on if I didn’t know that Jesus was the one not only walking beside me, but holding me up with His mighty hand.  Jesus has been getting my attention, to let me know that I am His one true love.

Just like you would do with any other love in your life, I must daily cultivate my relationship with Jesus.  Spend time in His Word, talk with Him, get to know who God is and what His heart is like.  Because when I am in that place, where I know confidently that I am Jesus’ one true love and that He is mine, it is the most beautiful spot to be in.  Seriously, words cannot explain it, so I’m not going to try.  I simply want to encourage you to go there, and meet the LORD who calls you by name, who calls you his child, who loves you unconditionally.

Meeting God can be scary, I know exactly how that feels, to have all of your junk strung out before Him.  But know this brothers and sisters, God already knows your junk, He wants you to stop carrying it.  So tonight, its time to get intimate with God.  Fall before Him, tell Him where you are at, where you want to be, and that you’re ready to fall back in love with Him.  I promise you brothers and sisters, He will not disappoint you.
